Shots in the stomach???

does everyone have to give themselves shots in the stomach after surgery to help avoid blood clots?  I have heard about it on the boards but my surgeon has not mentioned it at all to me yet.  Is this something they wait to tell you about until you are in the hospital already?

does it depend on how much weight you need to lose?

I can only speak for myself but I never gave myself shots in the stomach.  I was given shots in the stomach while I was in the hospital but that stopped once I was discharged.
HTH!

Noelle,
I, too, only got heparin shots in the stomach while in the hospital. Once I was discharged, I never had to get one again.

Good luck!
Lisa

Same goes for me. I had one shot right before the surgery and then while in the hospital. None after discharge though.

I too can only speak for myself... I had the shots while I was in the hospital only.. Once I went home I did not have to give them to myself.. And no, they didn't hurt at all.

I haven't had my surgery yet, but in my info packet it does say that in some cases a patient may be given heparin to take home, but I think that is probably rare and for those who are at high risk for forming blood clots.
Take care!

You are amazing!

Thanks everyone!  I think I was more anxious over the idea of the shots than the actual surgery!  Weird...
Just so excited!
